Patented technology enables high-contrast light-colored markings for wire and cable identification applications
HOUSTON, Texas, September 18, 2026 – Evantic, a leading provider of high-performance polymer components and solutions, announced that Altamira Material Solutions, an Evantic company based in Houston, has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 12,583,994 for technology related to UV laser-markable colored wire insulation material. Issued March 24, 2026, the patent recognizes an innovative material formulation developed to produce high-contrast, light-colored markings on dark-colored fluoropolymer insulation using a UV laser.
The patented technology was developed by Samuel Abiodun, Rodrigo Costa, and Andrew Bastian and is incorporated into the development of Evantic’s Plastolon® laser-markable PTFE tape for wire and cable identification applications. It addresses a longstanding challenge in laser marking PTFE insulation by enabling white or other light-colored markings on dark-colored material, providing an alternative to conventional UV laser marking, which typically produces dark markings on light-colored insulation. The resulting high contrast supports the permanent identification required in specialized wire and cable applications.
“This patent represents an important advancement in the laser marking of PTFE materials for demanding wire and cable applications,” said Mike Gaffney, Chief Financial Officer and Acting CEO of Evantic. “It reflects our continued investment in materials science and product development to address the evolving identification requirements of the aerospace and electrical industries.”
Advancing wire and cable identification
UV laser marking provides a permanent method for identifying wires and cables with numbers, letters, and other distinguishing information. The patented formulation incorporates a proprietary UV laser-marking additive into fluoropolymer insulation to produce high-contrast light-colored markings when exposed to a UV laser. The patented technology is applicable to PTFE and other fluoropolymers and is designed for applications where durable, legible identification is critical.
The technology builds on Evantic’s expertise in unsintered PTFE tape, recognized for more than 30 years for its consistent color and uniform material properties. Unsintered PTFE tape offers excellent electrical properties and is widely used in wire and cable applications, including those requiring high arc propagation resistance.
Evantic’s Plastolon® line of UV laser-markable unsintered PTFE tape is designed to meet the demanding requirements of aircraft cable wiring applications. The tapes meet AS22759, BMS 13, EN2262, and ASTM D6585 standards and feature proprietary laser-marking properties for permanent identification on or within cable cores.
Plastolon® laser-markable PTFE tape is available in a range of shades designed to support aircraft wire identification requirements, with custom colors available upon request. View the UV laser-markable color chart to see the available shades. The tape is suitable for applications constructed to standards including EN3838, EN2267-008 and -010, AS6070/5 and /7, AS22759/80-96, and some NEMA WC 27500 applications.
